British Naturalisation

British naturalisation is the most common route for adults seeking UK citizenship after holding settlement status (usually Indefinite Leave to Remain) and meeting residency, good character and language requirements. This route allows the applicant to become a British citizen with full rights, including voting, working without restriction and obtaining a British passport.

At Mowbray Advisory, we provide clear, OISC-regulated guidance on naturalisation eligibility, documentation and application preparation to help you navigate this important stage with confidence.

Who Can Apply for British Naturalisation?

You may be eligible if:

  • You are 18 or over
  • You have lived in the UK for the qualifying residency period
  • You hold settlement status (ILR or equivalent)
  • You meet the good character requirement
  • You meet the English language requirement
  • You have passed the Life in the UK test

Different conditions apply for spouses/civil partners of British citizens — we can explain which criteria apply to you.

Qualifying Period and Residence

For most applicants:

  • You must have lived in the UK for at least 5 years
  • You must have held settlement status for at least 12 months (unless applying as a spouse of a British citizen)
  • You must not have spent more than the permitted number of days outside the UK during the qualifying period

Key Requirements for Naturalisation

  • Good Character – No serious criminal record or adverse immigration history
  • English Language – Must meet the required English competency
  • Life in the UK – You must pass the official test
  • Evidence of Residency – Proof of lawful residence throughout the qualifying period

Each application is assessed individually, and careful preparation helps reduce the risk of refusal.
